Welcome to STEAM by MAX!

STEAM, sometimes called STEM, includes Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Math.

Here at MAX, STEAM is the newest and brightest frontier of children’s educational programming. It’s all about taking these academic subject areas and opening your child up to a fantastical world of learning that doesn’t feel like learning! Each week kids cover a new topic and tackle a new challenge that’s fun, hands-on, and age appropriate. Experience or even interest in science and technology is not at all required, and there’s fun to be had for all skill levels. The curriculum is progressive, so children work to build up their knowledge and practical skills over time.

Give your child a hands-on introduction to a variety of STEAM topics with a focus on fun and creativity with classes available in Coding, Robotics and STEAM 101. Registration is now open!

Robotics

Robotics I (Grades 3-6)

Participants learn the basics of computer programming and apply it to design robots to complete various challenges. They will design, build and program Lego robots. Using Lego WeDo kits, creations include simple rovers and mechanical contraptions and more advance motion sensors and tilt sensors. The program is specifically designed for elementary aged students. It bundles designing, building, problem-solving, computer programming, critical thinking, collaboration and communication into one exciting program. Entry level course.  6 weeks/1 session per week running from March 3rd through April 7th.

Robotics II (Grades 3-6)

Participants learn more advanced programming and apply it to design robots to complete more complex challenges. They will design, build and program Lego robots. This course has an extra emphasis on programming. The program is specifically designed for elementary aged students. It bundles designing, building, problem-solving, computer programming, critical thinking, collaboration and communication into one exciting program. 6 weeks/1 session per week running from March 4th through April 8th.

STEAM 101

STEAM 101 is an introductory level program, covering:

  • Squeeze some Slime! Your child will have a blast with simple chemistry experiments. Expect a crowd favorite – slime!
  • Paper Circuits. Lights on! Explore the basics of electrical circuits with LED lights, switches, batteries and copper tape!
  • Computer Programming! Your child will learn the basics and logic of computer programming using the Scratch block programming interface!
  • Robotics – Build a Robot! Your child will be introduced to the fundamentals of computer programming and get to build and learn using LEGO robotics kits.
  • Hydraulics. Lift it up! Your child will hone their engineering skills and learn about the power of hydraulics while building a scissor lift.
  • Magnets. Does it stick? This week is all about magnetism, what sticks, what doesn’t and we can use magnets in different ways.
  • Balance/Intertia. Keep it steady! Children will create a balancing device to explore the concept of inertia.
  • Friction. Stop! This week we will explore the role of friction in everyday activities.
  • Biomedical Engineering. The world of medicine consists of more than just doctors and nurses. Your child will learn about the role of technology in medicine and the power of the human body.

Why STEAM? Exercise The Brain

Research shows that exposing children to STEAM in their early years has incredible benefits, both now and in the long term. For one, they are learning a multitude of skills they will take with them throughout life’s journey including analytical and critical thinking, creative problem solving skills, perseverance and grit, and lots of independence. They also gain confidence and social skills through working with peers and having fun.

PLUS think of all the possibilities of early exposure to these fields! You never know, they may discover a lifelong passion and become a chemist, computer programmer, mathematician, or chief engineer.

MAX is excited and proud to be able to deliver our well-researched and proven curriculum to children in the St. John’s area, and to join in the growing global standard of getting children active in STEAM from a young age. Thanks to our franchise agreement with US-based company STEM for Kids®, we are able to offer hundreds of hours of unique learning developed by experts in both their subject manner and in creating fun, age-appropriate lesson plans. STEAM by MAX classes are always taught by our awesome STEAM TEAM that come from a variety of educational science backgrounds.
