Academy Dance Program

What is MAX Dance Academy?

The MAX Dance Academy program is designed for students who have a true passion for dance. These students wish to train with like-minded peers and are pushed and encouraged to reach their full potential through the guidance of caring and dedicated teachers.

The Academy program runs in Mount Pearl on Mondays, Tuesdays and Wednesdays and in St. John’s on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays (depending on age and level). The curriculum consists of a multitude of obligatory disciplines including, but not limited to, Ballet, Pre Pointe/Pointe, Jazz, Tap, Modern, Hip Hop, Latin and newly introduced Fitness training (Mount Pearl), Pilates (St. John’s) and health/nutrition classes.

Students in this program have excelled. Each year graduates are accepted into prestigious dance training institutions and universities. Our students have also used skills developed in our program to branch out into other fields such as physiotherapy, kinesiology, dietetics, stage management, and medicine.

I have done Ballet, Jazz and Modern but not Tap. Can I still do this program?

Dancers need to have a solid dance background, however, if you have experience in a number of areas but less in one or two we encourage you to still apply so we can assess and guide you.

How is MAX Dance Academy different from the classes I take now?

Students who are accepted into the Academy program train with dancers who have the same goals and attitudes. Academy students receive carefully constructed, progressive training by experienced teachers. The dance classes are complimented with additional cross-training activities and monthly workshops on nutrition and health. We offer a successful Teaching Assistant program, and MAX Academy students are invited to participate in our annual trip to New York City where we train with the world’s best.

Do MAX Academy students perform?

Yes. The students participate in their own end of year performance as well as numerous public performances throughout the year. MAX Dance students do not need to buy expensive costumes. We have an extensive costume bank and students are able to avail of the costumes for a $10 maintenance fee.

MAX is only in its second year, so how can this program be considered “established”?

The Academy program originated at The School of Dance, a dance studio owned by Marie Steffen, who is now the Director of Dance at MAX. The Academy program is actually in its sixth year. We have an 80% plus retention rate year after year within this program.

What is the schedule and is it expensive?
